Dandruff: Causes & Treatment

What is Dandruff?
Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear. Dandruff may make your scalp itchy, too. It can also occur on oily areas of the body, such as the face, upper chest and back.

What are the causes of Dandruff?
The skin cells on your body and scalp usually multiply when you need more of them. Then they die and shed off. When you have dandruff, skin cells on your scalp shed more quickly than usual. The main cause of dandruff is seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that turns the skin oily, red, and scaly. The white or yellow scales flake off, creating dandruff.

Treatment
For mild to moderate cases, look for dandruff shampoos that contain the following active ingredients:

  • Zinc pyrithione: Which is antibacterial and antifungal. Dandruff is not caused by fungus, but it still helps by slowing the production of excess skin cells.
  • Menthol: The minty harshness breaks down the clumps of dead skin, making it easier to rinse the dandruff away with a simple shampooing or good scrub. It also cleans the pores of irritants, so the hair can grow easily, and purifies it with rich oils so sit is shiny and beautiful.
  • Salicylic Acid: Which helps in removing excess skin cells.
